Our AAC Course Compatibility: Proloquo2Go, TD Snap, TouchChat, and More

In a Q&A With Mr. Sims* session, Heather addressed a common question we receive: “Is the Proloquo2Go portion compatible with other AAC programs?” This question refers to our optional AAC course component.

Our AAC course description: “You'll learn how to format, customize, and navigate the app like a pro. Your student will learn core words, meaningful words, sentence building, and how to use AAC in academics and real life.”

While our course is built on a Proloquo2Go interface, it can also be used with other AAC programs. Tobii Dynavox’s TD Snap Core First** and TouchChat are the most compatible. Programs like LAMP, while excellent for communication skills, do not crossover as well.

For example, I’ve used the course with my daughter, who uses TD Snap Core First. During Week 2 of the course, WANT is the featured core word. I used the “I Want” worksheet to help her get used to her device and learn not only where to find “I want,” but also how to locate the foods listed. I began with some hand-over-hand support to guide her through a few sentences, and she was soon able to continue on her own. For us, and for many others, success comes down to repetition.

During the same school session, we did a simple coloring activity. My daughter loves to make choices, especially about colors, so this was a perfect opportunity for her to repeat the phrase “I want” while letting me know which color she wanted to use.

At that time, she was still early in her AAC journey. Even now, two years later, I return to core word practice from time to time because she uses her device in different ways and I want to reinforce what she has already learned. This is especially important if I notice she is not using certain words in her everyday communication.

Personally, I let my daughter guide how she uses her device. She took off with it and has developed her own style. She loves the keyboard function more than the pre-set buttons, so she will often type out “I want” instead of using the quick-access buttons. It really just depends on the moment and what she feels like doing.

In the end, the goal is not about which AAC app you use. It is about helping your student communicate with confidence. While our course is built with Proloquo2Go in mind, the strategies and practice activities carry over beautifully to TD Snap, TouchChat, and even beyond. Every student’s AAC journey looks a little different, and that is why repetition, flexibility, and following their lead matter most. Wherever your student is starting, this course can grow with them and support the way they learn best.

🔑 Key Takeaways

  • Our AAC course is built with Proloquo2Go, but works well with TD Snap Core First and TouchChat too.

  • Core word practice (like “I want”) can be adapted across different activities.

  • Repetition and flexibility are essential for building AAC confidence.

  • Every student’s AAC journey looks different — let their individual style and pace guide the process.

After posting, we were contacted by one of our subscribers and she let us know that the app AVAZ also works well with our program. Thank you for sharing!

*Our “Q&A With Mr. Sims” sessions are weekly video chats open to all subscribers. This added feature gives you a chance to ask questions, get support, and connect in real time.

** Tobii Dynavox's TD Snap comes with multiple page sets for different forms of communication. The version that works best with our program is TD Snap Core First.
