Keep the Progress Going – Why Summer School Matters for Nonspeaking Students

education homeschool May 30, 2025

For many families, summer is a chance to slow down and enjoy a different pace. But for nonspeaking or minimally speaking students, a long break from structured learning can lead to real setbacks in academic skills, motor development, and daily routines.

Mr. Sims recommends all students (and parents!) take at least a two-week break from school; however, he also realizes that for many students even that can be too long. At The Autism Oasis, we believe learning should continue year-round—but in a way that feels fun, manageable, and affirming for both child and parent. That’s why we created our Nonverbal Autism Summer School program—designed specifically for kindergarten and 1st grade students who communicate differently but are eager to learn.

Why Summer Learning Matters for Our Students πŸŒž

Here are some of the biggest reasons to stay engaged over the summer:

  • Maintain a Consistent Routine
Many of our students thrive on structure. A break from routine can feel disorienting and increase anxiety. Our summer school helps maintain a gentle daily rhythm, promoting security and calm.
  • Prevent Regression
Without reinforcement, kids can lose up to two months of progress in core subjects. Our program includes reading, phonics, math, science, and more—all designed with AAC users and spellers in mind.
  • Support Ongoing Motor Development
Every lesson includes intentional motor activities to support both gross and fine motor skills, which are essential for communication and learning.
  • Keep Students Engaged and Curious
Summer school doesn’t have to mean worksheets and textbooks. With water play, art, and hands-on learning, this program keeps students engaged in fun, sensory-rich ways.
  • Reduce Transition Stress in the Fall
Continuing to learn through the summer can make the transition to a new school year much smoother—especially for children who struggle with change.
  • Build Confidence and Momentum
Every small success over the summer helps build confidence and maintains a sense of achievement and growth.

Whether you're new to homeschooling or simply want to avoid the “summer slide,” this curriculum was created to help your child stay on track while having fun.
